Teacup puppy facts

“Teacup” is a description—not a separate breed.

Some puppies are naturally smaller than others, but labels such as “teacup” and “pocket” should never matter more than health, structure, and quality of life.

What families should know

Extremely small size can carry serious risks.

“Teacup” and “pocket” are terms some sellers use to create extra interest or justify a higher price. They are not separate Yorkie or Maltese breed classifications.

Dogs bred deliberately for extremely tiny size may face more health and structural problems, including underdeveloped organs, liver problems, open fontanels, and other complications that can require significant veterinary care.

Choose for the whole life ahead

Temperament and health come first.

Ask about the puppy’s current weight, parents, projected adult size, veterinary exam, feeding needs, and low-blood-sugar precautions. Adult weight is always an estimate, never a guarantee.
